Frequently asked questions

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is about being named and cited correctly when AI engines answer people's questions. For Australian health and legal businesses, the "correctly" part matters as much as being named. The AI Answer Tracker records what those answers say.

What is AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation)?

AEO is the work of making your pages easy for AI answer engines to find, understand, use and cite, so that when they answer a question about your field, they name you and describe you accurately. Examples of these engines include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Copilot.

How is AEO different from SEO?

AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google's AI features retrieve from Google's normal search index, so a page that can be crawled and indexed comes first. AEO then focuses on whether AI answers actually name and cite you.

Who is the AI Answer Tracker for?

Australian businesses in fields where accuracy matters: health clinics and practices, law firms, and the agencies that look after their websites. It suits anyone who needs to know what AI engines say about them, in the engines' own words.

Why does this matter more for health and legal businesses?

Both fields have strict rules about what they say in public. Health services have rules on how they advertise, including what they can say about treatments and results. Lawyers have conduct and advertising rules that differ between states and territories. An AI answer that gets your fees, services or service area wrong, or implies an outcome you'd never promise, can damage trust in your name. It's worth knowing when that happens.

Does it check whether my business is compliant?

No. The tracker records what AI engines say about you, word for word, with the date, the question and the sources cited, so you and your advisers can review it. It doesn't assess compliance, doesn't give legal or regulatory advice, and isn't endorsed or approved by any regulator or professional body.

Which AI engines does the tracker check?

Grok is checked today, through xAI's official API. ChatGPT (OpenAI API) and Perplexity (Agent API) are rolling out. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode will come from your Search Console data, and Copilot from your Bing Webmaster Tools data. Each engine is marked live only once it's running. See how the tracker checks each engine.

Does it track Google AI Overviews and AI Mode?

It's rolling out. The tracker will use Google's own Search Console Generative AI report, which shows AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions for your pages, filtered to Australia. That report shows impressions only, and doesn't split AI Overviews from AI Mode. To be confirmed: whether manual Google checks are included

Does it scrape ChatGPT or other AI apps?

No. The tracker uses official APIs only. It never drives or scrapes chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, grok.com, google.com or Copilot.

Will my results match what I see in the AI apps?

Not exactly. The consumer apps can use different models, hidden instructions, personalisation and search settings from the API. The tracker's results are a consistent signal for tracking change over time, not a copy of what one person sees.

How often are questions checked?

The planned schedule checks priority questions every week and the full question set every month, with several samples each time. To be confirmed: check frequency for customer plans

How many questions can I track?

To be confirmed: how many questions each plan includes

Does it work for Australian businesses?

Yes. Grok's API has no location setting, so Australia is set in the prompt and the results are labelled to show it. As ChatGPT and Perplexity roll out, their location will be set to Australia through their APIs. Google data will use Search Console's Australia filter. Copilot data is global.

Does it check answers against my facts?

Coming soon. You'll keep a short facts file, such as your fees, the services you do and don't offer, and your service area. Answers that don't match will be flagged for a person to confirm before they count. Until then, every answer is saved word for word for you to read.

Can it promise my business gets cited?

No. The tracker measures whether AI answers name and cite you. It doesn't change what engines say and doesn't promise citations or placement.
